Discussion of Service Saturday
Service Saturday: Saturday October 24
- Discussed Pros and Cons of Service Saturday
- Discussed suggestions for next service Saturday
- Kate Suhr from God’s Love We Deliver gave a brief presentation and thanks
Pros of Service Saturday
- Cards were a good idea: felt personal, true community service
- People seemed to enjoy making the cards
- Not much effort was involved
- Good location
Cons of Service Saturday
- Not enough people showed up
- Wasn’t enough to do
- People would make one card, then leave
- Time may have been wrong
Suggestions for Next Service Saturday
- Hopefully sometime in the spring
- Maybe a weekday afternoon (though difficult due to conflicting sports schedules)
- Instead of making cards, something more active and that requires more attention
- Could also be on a Sunday instead of a Saturday
- Could start later
- Suggestions for making the next Service Saturday more active: volunteering at a soup kitchen, Meals on Wheels, Safe Haven
- Meals on Wheels & Safe Haven have been successful in the past
Holiday Carnival
- Now scheduled for January 9, attendance of schools has changed
- Nightingale no longer able to attend, need to find a school to cover for them
- Stations have stayed the same as last year for the most part
- Hewitt no longer doing freeze dance, need new station
- Need volunteers from each school
- Need volunteer photographer
Browning Event
- February 20
- Browning gym available for event
- Decide whether or not there should be a theme
- Committee of 4-5 should start meeting ASAP to plan this event
- Try and get more students to come
- Always difficult getting attendance
- Coffeehouse?
- Battle of the Bands
- Open Mic
- All of the above have been discussed, people generally agree that it should be a music-geared event, think that this would draw more attention to it
- Will this be too much like Independent Voices? Make it less formal, more music than poetry and open mic
- If we do this, start raising awareness in our schools and seeing if people would perform or not
“FEAST” Festival of the Arts—possible Browning event
- Upcoming (spring) Arts Festival
- Dates undecided: could be the February 20 event at Browning or possibly March, if location is available
- Could plan for next fall, may be hard to work out this year
- A festival where students auction off or show their art and either people buy it or pay an entry fee
- Money goes to charity
- Still need to figure out whether the art will be auctioned or just shown
- Figure out a space, date
- New acronym
- Try and e-mail students at each school for an estimate of how many people would submit art
Next Meeting: December 10th at Columbia
4 West 93rd Street
