    Minutes from JSA Student Rep Meeting The Brearley School Thursday September 28, 2006

    Schools In Attendance (partial list): Birch, Brearley, Chapin, Collegiate, Columbia Grammar, Dwight, La Scuola, Marymount, Nightingale, Riverdale and Spence.

    JSA Executive Board In Attendance:  Ritu Banga, President; Sabina Wu, Recording Secretary; and Diane Discenza, Student Committee Chair.

    Opening Remarks

    New and returning students were welcomed to the meeting.  Diane Discenza, a Spence parent, introduced herself as the new Student Committee Chair.  She will help facilitate student meetings.  Students are encouraged to contact her at discenza@nyc.rr.com with any questions or ideas.

    Students should consult the JSA website www.jointschoolsny.org to stay informed about upcoming events.  Both JSA sponsored and non-JSA school sponsored activities will be highlighted.  If you have a school event, i.e. dance, coffeehouse etc., which you would like to advertise to member schools, please send the pertinent information to webmaster@jointschoolsny.org.  In order to raise the profile of JSA among students and parents, schools are encouraged to create a link to the JSA website from their own website.

    Upcoming Events (List in Progress):

    Saturday, November 18, Holiday Carnival, Christ Church -
    An annual event to entertain children from the Mission Society’s after-school program.  Each school will sponsor an activity booth featuring a game, craft etc.  Reps should come to the next meeting prepared to discuss their school’s booth.

    Winter Athletic Event – students remain interested in having some sort of indoor sporting event that can be social and perhaps raise money for a charity.  Securing school gyms and field houses is difficult, so other ideas are being explored.  The idea of a bowling afternoon/evening was discussed.  Some students were reluctant to consider Harlem Bowling Lanes because they didn’t know how to get there and felt that others would have the same problem. Bowlmor Lanes downtown was suggested as an alternative.  Some students expressed a preference for an afternoon event vs. evening event.  The point was also made that some students have sports competitions on Friday afternoons that would prevent them from attending anything before 8pm .

    Students seemed particularly enthusiastic about having an ice skating event.  Using the seasonal rink at Bryant Park will be explored.

    Winter 2007 Browning Coffee House, date TBD.  Proceeds go to JSA.  Other schools are encouraged to host events in support of JSA.  Monies are needed to fund food supplies for Sandwich Saturdays and other JSA community service projects.

    February – Sandwich Saturday (making sandwiches/food bags for the homeless).  Charity and venue TBD.

    Friday, April 27, 2007 – Independent Voices.  An annual poetry reading at Barnes and Noble Lincoln Center.  The date is confirmed.  More info to follow.

    April/May 2007 – Independent Visions.   An annual student photography exhibition.  A gallery space is needed to host this weekend-long event.  Date and venue TBD.

    There is no October event because Publicolor discontinued its student volunteer program.A Breast Cancer Walk on October was briefly discussed but students didn’t feel they could mobilize volunteers on such short notice.Participation in the Goddard Riverside Book Fair in mid-October and mid-November was discussedSubsequent research indicated that the event would not lend itself to JSA participation (the actual book fair space is small and could not accommodate a group of 30 or more students working together).Work will continue throughout the year to find another event to replace Publicolor for next fall.

    Other Potential Community Service Events To Be Explored:

    ·        Gift wrapping at Barnes and Noble (for donations to a specified charity), JCC , or Yorkville Common Food Pantry;

      ·        A planting/renovation project on a Saturday in Central Park (organized through the Central Park Conservancy);

      ·        Care packages for soldiers in Iraq;

    ·        Move Against Aids Dance-a-thon (Brearley already participates).

    Misc.
    Both Spence and Nightingale mentioned that their schools are planning Battle of the Bands evenings.  Details to follow.

    THE NEXT MEETING IS AT 4:15 ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19TH AT CHAPIN.  This will be a joint student-parent meeting.  Chapin is located at 100 East End Avenue, between 84th and 85th.
